Special report: How can Michigan fix a guardianship system that fails some kids and older adults? by Estelle SlootmakerThis article is part of State of Health, a series about how Michigan communities are rising to address health challenges. It is made possible with funding from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund. Courts often appoint a guardian to take over legal responsibility and make all legal, social, financial, and health care decisions for a child or an incapacitated adult, known as a ward. The purpose of guardianship is to make sure that wards are protected from harm, homelessness, neglect, or financial fraud. And while few court-appointed guardians take intentional advantage of their wards, the guardianship system as it works today in Michigan puts wards at risk for both unnecessary forfeiture of all civil rights and diminished quality of life. In some cases, family members have been passed over in favor of professional guardians; wards have been moved from their long-time homes into nursing homes, with their treasured personal items ending[…]

It was alleged that she did horrible things. She will not be awarded the opportunity to do those things again on a professional basis. Employers… decent ones do there back ground checks. When they hire hopefully they give thought to how she will work for them but at the end of the day, the State tried and convicted her and she did her time. She is out now and needs to contribute as member of society. We need her to be employed not unemployed as someone has to pay for that too. Do you have proof of this or is this just more lies? Slandering people, defamation of character not a good thing. I would look closely at what you have contained in that glass house of yours. Hate for someone to expose all the choices you have made in life. I’m sure not all of them have been the kind that you can say you are proud of- remember she did her time. If she is doing adult things with other adults let that be their thing- the public doesn’t really care. So it’s just a waste of our time trying to make her look worse. That’s all.

She has done her time. She is trying to be a productive member of society. She was released because the State believed she was ready. We are not our mistakes but we are who we became when we learn from them. Employers do background checks, employees or people who go searching to get someone fired should be ashamed. Don’t we want people like her working and paying her taxes or do we want her unemployed while we as tax payers pay her to stay home. Think about it.Also posting mistruths about individuals doesn’t serve any of us well.Move on- be the good in the world not the bad. Wishing bad karma on someone just puts it back on you.

I heard she is doing really well. She has definitely turned her life around. Seems she is working progressively to live her life the right way. We are not our mistakes we are are who we become when we learn from them and she is choosing to be a productive member of society. She has served her time, she can not change the past. It was alleged she did some terrible things and yes, she may have a admitted to some of those things but she released because she was considered ready to try and be a part of society in a good way.No one says forget about what she has done but don’t slander her and post mistruths about her. It doesn’t do any good.

Dear Nina and David: Thank you for taking the time to write this. I'm Canadian and am at a loss at the prevalence of what I am learning/reading about. High profile cases in the entertainment world and low-profile, Joe Blow, people ... this is modern day SLAVERY and wrong on so many fronts in the 20th and 21st centuries. And Canada is no better. What happened to Florips is not isolated. Elder abuse has been trivialized on both sides of our borders. Please keep the momentum going to expose guardianships as modern day slavery.

As Floridian and Hall of Fame Football coach Lou Holtz has noted recently in the Miami Herald, “Guardianship abuse may more correctly be thought of as guardian, medical and legal abuse, because without unethical, predatory individuals in all of those fields working together, such abuse is impossible to carry out. It takes more than a corrupt guardian to do these terrible things — it takes a corrupt guardian, a corrupt lawyer, a corrupt doctor, often a corrupt nursing home or ... March 2007 Bar Bulletin A Call for Executive Oversight of Guardians By Margaret K. Dore  With increasing numbers of Americans living longer, many are finding themselves under guardianship. The guardian appointed may be a family member or friend, or a “professional” guardian or guardianship company. In many cases, the guardian is honest and hardworking. Unfortunately, in some cases, however, the guardian abuses or exploits the ward. The exact magnitude of this problem is not known, but the names of articles ... The Media Wakes up to the Abuse! I was excited when “Edith and Eddy” came out and was nominated for an Academy Award. I was thrilled to witness the success of Billy Mintz’s “The Guardians” movie. I was shocked by Netflix Episode 5 in 2020 on “Dirty Money” about guardianship abuse. I was amazed at the in depth expose by Gretchen Rachel Hammond of the racket in Michigan. I have been delighted to see article after article in the press ... The post Media Wakes up to Abuse appeared first on Guardian Abuse Cases.

My nephew has lost a substantial amount of weight after being placed under a public guardian’s care by court order.  He lives in Reno, NV.  His warm coat was taken from him.  He shows up in below-freezing weather with just a T-shirt on.  He was so cold one day he took his mother’s coat after one of her extremely-limited visitations.  His mother has evidence of rotten food the home is trying to make him eat.  Law enforcement has been called ... Guardian Abuse Cases Aug 11, 2016 | 01:44 am

Introduction Currently all district courts who adjudicate adult guardianships have no effective uniform reporting or oversight requirements. Given that guardianship removes all civil rights and estate assets from the proposed ward, due process must be insured. Due process should not be the obligation of family members at family cost, today it is. If a family objects to a guardianship ruling, the appeal process costs the family in excess of $100,000 in litigation fees…and the fight also insures the ... Guardian abuse of seniors, their families and estates is a problem, which authorities have denied for decades.  Private guardians are hired when a family has issues of dysfunction, the senior has no one to help them or the court decides a private guardian is needed. The power a guardian has over a senior is stronger than the power of a doctor, attorney, real estate broker or financial planner.  All of the professions are heavily regulated.  Professionals in the above industries ...
